INTRODUCTION
While many university and college
art museums do not exhibit student artworks, the Snite Museum of Art is pleased
to provide graduating art students with an opportunity to be considered for
exhibition within an accredited art museum.
In turn, students are expected to follow the policies outlined in this
document and they should be aware that the Museum has no obligation to exhibit
all artworks submitted. Just as many
student theses and dissertations are never published and not all manuscripts
created by students within the ND Creative Writing department are published by
the Notre Dame Press or the Notre Dame Review, the Museum bears no
obligation to exhibit all student artworks.
SUBMISSION / INSTALLATION
The Snite Preparation Department
Staff are available Monday-Friday. Works
will not be installed on weekends.
The Museum staff has final say on arrangement and
installation of works within the exhibition.
We make no guarantees on the amount of gallery/wall space available
to each student.
Insurance:
Student artworks are not insured by the Snite Museum of Art or the
University of Notre Dame. That is, student artists assume all risks
associated with displaying their artworks at the Snite Museum.
During the installation of the
exhibit, we ask that traffic in the gallery be kept to an absolute minimum,
both for ease of installation and safety of the work. Only
students with works in the exhibition who have specific business with their
submission will be allowed in the gallery.
Faculty, other than the assigned liaisons, are asked not to visit the gallery during
installation. The Snite Museum of Art
Preparation Department staff members will install your pieces. In certain
instances students may be asked to be present to help install their work.
DEADLINES
Late art work or label/statement submissions will not be
accepted.
The deadline for submission has
been established to accommodate the production schedule and to ensure an overall
professional exhibition.
To mount an exhibition, works must
be accepted and arranged; pedestals and risers must be selected and painted;
labels must be created from information submitted; art works must be hung,
lighted, and labeled; gallery floors must be cleaned and buffed. It takes time for all of this to be done
well. Your submission and whole exhibit
will look much better when we have appropriate time to thoughtfully place and
carefully light all the works.
PAPERWORK
M.F.A. and B.F.A. candidates are
responsible for all label information, artist statement (if required), and any
didactic information. This must be delivered
to the Snite Museum with the work. All information must be proofread by your
faculty advisor and edited before you deliver it to us. Any uncorrected
information will be posted as received.
(Please see page 5)
Each artwork will be accompanied
by a completed, signed registration form. (To be supplied by and filled out at
the Snite.) Please note the registration
form indicates that insurance of the artwork is the responsibility of the
artist. The registration forms are used
to track the works. It is important to
save your copy of the form, as you will need it to retrieve your submissions at
the end of the exhibition.
GALLERY CONDITIONS
Work must be delivered via the
loading dock entrance on the S.W. side of the Museum. The loading dock entry to the gallery is 82”
x 58”. Your submission should
accommodate these dimensions.
Works that include electrical
wiring must be UL approved or wired by a licensed electrician. No works may involve highly volatile
chemicals. Works may not include
substances that may pollute the galleries.
No live plants, unless they are accompanied by a proof of fumigation
certificate from a florist. Works that
are deemed hazardous or found to have insect infestations or fungal growth will
be removed from the Museum.
Electronics: Works that need to be turned on and off need to be
delivered with a working self starting/stopping timer. The Museum will not be responsible for daily
starting and stopping a work during the run of the exhibition.
SHARED SPACE
Please remember that there is only
so much space available in the gallery. Once
again, the Snite’s Museum staff have final say on how much space is available,
placement and installation of all works.
Please be considerate of your
fellow classmates. Conditions in the
gallery can only be altered to a certain point before the alteration begins to
interfere with the viewing of someone else’s piece. (For example, a work requiring almost total
darkness would be tough to work into an otherwise well-lighted gallery or works
using sound may need to have volume lowered or turned off if it interferes with
other students’ works.)
PLEASE NOTE:
No works may be hung from the ceiling.
Works may not be mounted to walls with
adhesives (this includes vinyl lettering).
No holes larger than 1/4” may be drilled into
the walls.
No holes may be drilled into the floor.
Electronics with small components must come
with appropriate security mounts.
READY TO HANG
You are strongly encouraged to try
to test hang/install your work before submission to the Snite. This will help you determine if special
hanging hardware is needed. Students are
responsible for supplying any special hanging hardware required –i.e.: lag
bolts, special hooks or brackets, hinges, etc.
If you are unsure of how your work might be hung, consult the Faculty
Liaison or call Ramiro as soon as possible
All 2-D works should be framed and
equipped with wire and D-rings or screw eyes or pre-approved hanging hardware
at the time they are submitted to the gallery.
(See page 7 of handout for wiring and mounting instructions)
Similar requirements apply to 3-D
works intended for wall display. The sculpture should be created in such a way
that it will be ready to hang when submitted to the gallery.
The Snite hangs most of it’s work
at a 58-60” center line. If your work
needs to be hung at a specific height, or if a series of works need to be hung
in a specific way in relation to each other please provide carefully detailed
instructions/drawings with heights, distances from each other, etc. We will try to accommodate any reasonable
request but may condense works if space becomes limited.
FLOOR PIECES
Floor pieces may be placed
directly on the floor or on low risers (if available). Unstable floor pieces (i.e., works that are
likely to tip over or are otherwise dangerous) will not be accepted. Please remember that floor pieces run a
greater risk of damage from traffic through the galleries, and their absolute
safety cannot be guaranteed.
PEDESTALS, RISERS & MOVABLE WALLS
The Snite Museum has a limited
supply of pedestals and risers that will be available to students on a
first-come, first-served basis. Advance
notice is required to prepare any pedestals or risers.
Time and material constraints make
custom-built pedestals and risers an impossibility, but if you wish to build
your own in advance the Snite can provide you with paint samples that matches
the gallery space. Pedestals you build should arrive with your work by the designated
deadline date.
M.F.A. candidate needs have
priority. There are 11 movable walls
available
(4’ x 18” x 9’10”). Stationary walls may not be altered. Consult the Snite Museum Preparation
Department for more information.
DOCUMENTATION
You may take photos of your work
on Mondays, between 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., after the exhibition has
opened. Please call in advance. Museum policy prohibits all others from
photographing works on loan to the museum, including those in the student
exhibition. Submissions may not be removed during the exhibit for any reason.
RETRIEVING YOUR WORK
Art works and student supplied
pedestals must be removed from the Snite by 4:00 p.m. May 18. Works not picked up by this date will be
disposed of. Works may be removed after
the Sunday, May 17 Graduation Ceremony (between 3-5 p.m.)(please have your
paper work handy). Artworks will only be released to the artist listed on the
registration form, or their designate with a signed note from the artist
stating they are unavailable to pick up the piece and naming the designate.
All labels should justified left, edited, dry mounted on mat board (not spray mounted /no foam core) and cut to ½” margin
around the top, left and bottom lines - 1/2” should extend to the right of
longest line. The Snite Museum can
provide mat board upon request.

artist statements to walls. No adhesive
is necessary from the student. Please use the following as a guide for label
